Outreach Mission Inc. (OMI) is a faith-based organization that began in the early 1980’s by a group of men and women from several local churches.
The shelter was first operated from the 705 Chatham Street location. The mission started as a safe place for homeless men to spend the night, get a hot meal and a bath.
The Mission became an incorporated non-profit in 1988. At first, board members and church volunteers operated the shelter from 5 PM-8 AM only.
In May 2018, the OMI Board of Directors expanded the mission goals to help more people.
OMI is now open for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with increased bed capacity. We have also incorporated the “Low Barrier, Housing First" approach.
Currently, the Mission employs full-time, paid staff, plus volunteers. Our mission takes seriously Jesus’ command in Matthew 25:35-40.
