Outreach Mission was founded in 1980 to "reach out to any persons in need, providing food, clothing, a hot bath, shelter and emotional support for a period of time." (Articles of Incorporation)
In the beginning, Outreach Mission ministered to men only providing much needed shelter for those who found themselves homeless, whether for one night or several. They were given safe shelter, food, and clothing. A second shelter was opened in 1988 to meet the needs of women and children.
Outreach Mission is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, and maintains two homeless shelters in Sanford, North Carolina; a men's shelter located at 705 Chatham Street, and a women's shelter at 507 S. Third Street. To call the Men's Shelter dial (919) 776- 8474, and to reach the Women's Shelter call (919) 774-7112. Outreach Mission is governed by a board of directors, elected by the membership of the corporation. Members of Outreach Mission are those who have contributed to the ministry in the preceding calendar year.
This faith-based ministry of caring takes seriously Jesus' command to feed the hungry and "invite a stranger in". The shelters operate seven days a week, 365 days a year and receive guests anytime. Both shelters are staffed by a live-in manager and an off-site case manager. Outreach Mission reaches out to those in need with the love of Christ and a message of hope.
Recalling the words of Jesus, "For when I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me... I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." In Jesus' name, our ministry reaches out to those in need, one person at a time.
